What October feels like
The first full week is Balloon Fiesta, when hundreds of balloons go up before sunrise and the entire city sets an alarm for the middle of the night. Rooms cost triple and book a year out; the wind pattern that makes it work has a name here, the Albuquerque Box, and locals will explain it whether you ask or not. Later in the month the cottonwoods along the Rio Grande turn gold and the city is yours again.
Real rain shows up about 2 days all month; the rest stay dry. The air runs dry — whatever the thermometer says, it wears easy.
