What January feels like
Only the north road, Gardiner through Mammoth to Cooke City, stays open to cars in winter; everything else is snowcoach, snowmobile, or ski, and all of it books out early. Mammoth sits in the park's low, mild corner — the interior around Old Faithful and Lake runs considerably colder than what you see here. Lamar Valley at first light is where the wolf watchers set up their scopes.
Winter is doing its thing: 11.5 in of snow in a typical January, with fresh snow on about 9 days. Nearly every night dips below freezing.
